Basics of learning to cook with fresh herbs

Basics of Learning to Cook with Fresh Herbs

Learning to use fresh herbs is a great way to spice up your cooking, making it tastier and better than ever before.  There are infinite ways to use fresh herbs in your cooking. This means that you get to use your imagination to create new ways of using the herbs you choose every day!  A benefit of using fresh herbs is that you will not need to use as much salt or fatty ingredients to add flavor and substance to your cooking.  This brings obvious health benefits as well as the fact that herbs are loaded with antioxidants which protect against cancer and heart disease.
Using recipes is a great way of introducing yourself to using fresh herbs in your cooking.  The next level of learning how to use herbs comes with fully understanding the different flavors of the herbs you are using.  To achieve this, I suggest first tasting each herb by itself, then add it to something bland yet familiar, such as rice or potatoes.  Finally, (and here’s where your creativity comes in) experiment by adding the herb whenever you think it will work.
If you’re using herbs from your own garden, it is important for you to know that the best herbs come from plants that are in the leaf making stage, not in the flowering (reproductive) stage.  During the flowering stage, leaves become bitter, grassy, woody, or yellowed because more of the plant’s energy is going toward flowering (reproduction).  You can delay your plant flowering by harvesting often.
When starting to grow herbs at home, it’s a good idea to start small so as not to become overwhelmed.  I recommend starting with six basic herbs, including:  Chives, Thyme, Tarragon, Oregano, Rosemary, and Basil.  A few others to add when you’re comfortable with the above might be:  Sage, Marjoram, and Dill.  Once you’re comfortable with all of these, you may wish to experiment with many others.  There are infinite possibilities.
When cooking with your herbs, it is a general guideline to use three times as much fresh as you would of a dried herb.  The best time to pick herbs from your garden is in the morning, after the dew has dried and before the sun gets hot.  This will provide you with the optimum flavor and best storage time line.
When storing your herbs in the refrigerator, I recommend putting them in a perforated plastic bag which you can easily make yourself by poking holes in a plastic bag.  They will keep this way for a few days.  If the herbs you’re storing have long stems, you can cut them at an angle, like flowers, and put them in water, covered loosely with a plastic bag in the refrigerator.  Change the water daily and they can last up to a week.  Be aware that longer herb storage times may result in diminished flavor.
A few ideas to get you started cooking with herbs include using Basil, Garlic, Oregano, and Rosemary for meat, stew, pasta, or casseroles.  To enhance sweetness, use Cinnamon, Ginger, and Nutmeg.  To heat up a dish, add black, red, or white Pepper.  Be sure to add fresh herbs at the end of cooking so that flavor lasts.  Keep in mind that you can use herb flowers for a beautiful garnish.
Happy Cooking!

Taurine in energy drinks

Taurine in Energy Drinks

A Japanese company released the first energy drink in 1962. The main ingredient is that drink is taurine and is still commonly used in energy drinks today. The first «energy drink» that came to the United States was actually a cola called Jolt Cola to which they added a whole lot more caffeine and sugar. It was introduced in the 1980s and quickly became the drink of college campuses.
First of all, let’s look at what most of these energy drinks are usually made of. Most of them are simply carbonated water loaded with gut-fattening high fructose corn syrup, caffeine, the amino acid taurine, and a few random B-vitamins thrown in for show to trick you into thinking there’s something healthy about these concoctions.
The main two ingredients of energy drinks are caffeine and taurine. These are the key elements that are supposed to «energize» our brain and body according to the plan of energy drinks creators. But practice shows different. The French scientists studied the composition and effects of energy drinks and came to the conclusion that the main ingredients of tonics do not go together and cause ambiguous body reactions.
Red Bull’s infamous ingredient is not from a bull’s semen or urine as reputed by urban legend, but rather, an amino acid, taurine, that was first discovered in bulls. This product is also banned in Denmark. Red Bull may be the best selling energy drink in the United States, but it isn’t so popular in other countries. It contains as much caffeine as two cans of Coke or Pepsi.
Another popular ingredient in energy drinks is taurine, which is actually something that we naturally get from foods that contain vitamin B6. We normally get more than enough taurine in out diet and the extra amount that we get from these energy drinks, depending on how much we consume, can become toxic in our systems.
The Energy drinks contain all kinds of vitamins, caffeine, and many other components that imitate the feeling of freshness and «refill» a person with vital energy to help in overcoming fatigue. Such components are Taurine or Carnitin. Those chemicals improve the metabolism and the concentration and cause significant withdrawal of tiredness symptoms.
Others point out that their only major concern is that people recognize the potential of these drinks and make use of them in moderation – in fact, many of the manufacturers of these drinks indicate on their packaging that they are not intended as fluid replacements and that there is a maximum advisable consumption per day.
Don’t be fooled by the small packaging bottle. 5-hour energy contains a huge 1870mg blend of delicious energy products such as taurine, citicoline, citicoline, tyrosine, phenylalanine, malic acid, glucuronolactone, and of course, caffeine. As well, 5-hour energy provides unparallel convenience, due to its small, 5 ounce bottle. A college student can carry it around with simple ease, and take shots whenever necessary.

The benefits of organic herbs

The Benefits of Organic Herbs

Organic herbs are preferable to non-organics because they are not grown using chemical fertilizers or chemical pesticides. Chemicals can leave residues on plant matter, and work their way into the plant’s roots, leaves, stems, flowers or bark, and this means that they can reach your body if you were to ingest them. Instead, a healthier alternative is to forgo the chemicals and stick with organic herbs. Organic herbs and spices add zesty flavor to recipes, drunk as tea and several can also be used for medicinal purposes. Organic herbs can also be purchased in bulk and for wholesale prices. Organic herbs provide a tantalizing alternative to herbs grown with chemicals.

Bulk organic herbs provide you a ready supply of tasty spice available at your fingertips. You might choose to keep a supply of organic bulk herbs handy in the kitchen, where you go through them frequently during recipe preparation. Standbys such as wonderful pepper, bay leaf, basil, cumin, curry powder, and so many more will be used day in and day out in your meals. Quick recipes utilizing pasta are common around dinnertime, and pastas need deeply flavored sauces to accompany them. No marinara, for example, would be complete without Italian seasoning. Featuring garlic, oregano, basil sage and marjoram, your sauce will reach the peak of perfection when you add these special spices to your dish. Desserts are no different. Pies would be flavorless without the appropriate spices. Allspice was made for pumpkin pie and hot apple cider, two fall favorites. Vanilla beans are your freshest-tasting choice for its distinctive flavor in recipes and drinks.

Certain organic herbs also make fragrant teas. Peppermint or chamomile have been used for centuries to soothe the stomach and provide a relaxing tonic before bedtime to help bring on restful sleep. Organic bulk herbs can also be combined into unique tea blends to satisfy your specific tastes. If you need a sweet-tasting pick me up that doesn’t come loaded with calories, try a tea blend of peppermint, chamomile, licorice root and cinnamon. Each of these organic herbs is lovely on its own, but when blended together provide dynamic contrasts that will heighten your taste sensory pleasure.

Those who will resell the herbs in products or in use in restaurants will find considerable savings in wholesale organic herbs. These wholesale top-quality organic herbs can be purchased in bulk quantities for deep savings.

When people shop for herbs, organic products are their first choice. No one wants to add harmful chemicals to their diets or apply it in medications or cosmetics to their bodies. This purity factor is why organic products are so popular. When you can keep your shelves stocked with delicious and aromatic organic herbs, you will attract discriminating shoppers who will recognize their value and come back for more.

Southern cooking brings essence to food

Southern Cooking Brings Essence to Food

I was born and raised in the heart of the Deep South. From as far back as I can remember I remember long summer afternoons spent drinking iced tea and shelling peas and butterbeans on my grandmother’s porch. I have moved on from my roots and have made my way into other regions of the world. One thing, however, that has remained constant in my life is my deep and abiding love for southern cooking and cuisine.
I was probably well into my teen years before I realized that tea could be served any other way than loaded with sugar and over ice. It was about that same time that I realized some folks would eat vegetables that hadn’t been soaked in batter, dredged in cornmeal, and deep fat fried. Southern cooking is not for the faint of heart though it can cause many hearts to grow faint. One thing that can be said is that you’ll never find anything else like it on earth.
People in the south learned to make do with little in many instances. Some of the poorest people in America live in the southern part of the country. Of course, you will find that many of these people despite their poverty are also among the most generous. The same can be said of food. It’s the one thing that seems to be in ample supply in most southern homes and very few will turn you away with an empty stomach.
Perhaps it’s the seasonings that are often used when cooking southern food. From the crab boil and gumbo file of Cajun Cuisine to the secret ingredient that almost every southern kitchen contains for their fried chicken recipes (and no one on earth can fry chicken like a born and bred southern grandma). Perhaps it’s the Sunday church dinners where everyone shares a little of what they have with others or the love that goes into preparing these meals that are shared with friends and family. Whatever the case may be, if you ever have the occasion to experience real southern cooking, do not pass it up. You might shave a day off your life, but a good southern fried chicken leg is really living and well worth the sacrifice if you ask me.
Of course it would be remiss to mention southern cooking without bringing up some of the more delicious desserts that seem to be perfection for the south. I mentioned banana pudding above but there are so many more. Pralines are a perfect for those living down around New Orleans as is bread pudding. A little to the east there are grandma’s who have taken their lemon icebox pie recipes to the grave with them so coveted were these delicious deserts and the same holds true for pecan pies as well. We should never forget the flavorful Mississippi Mud cake though, and so many other wonderfully delicious treats that southern cooking has introduced to the world at large.
Favorite vegetables in the heart of the south as I mentioned above included peas and butterbeans, snap beans, corn, summer squash (after all, it’s summer all year in the south), and okra (fried or boiled in many southern kitchens). Not all vegetables were deep fried though few were off limits. I remember eating my share of fried okra, fried squash, and yes, fried green tomatoes. Life was good back when calories weren’t counted and no one really worried about clogging arteries. While I wouldn’t make these a daily dish in any household, I certainly would recommend trying them out if you ever find the opportunity.
Another great thing about southern cooking is the wonderful fried seafood that seems to abound. From fried fish (almost any variety works well when it’s southern fried) to fried oysters, seafood just seems to taste so much better in the south. If you are hoping to learn some of the southern cooking and cuisine you will most likely need to order your spices and have them shipped unless your grocery store has a  rather extensive ‘exotic’ foods selection. You can sometimes find great southern seasonings on the International food aisles in grocery stores as well. If you want to really treat your family to an outstanding meal, you should really try southern cooking for the night.
