Green bean casserole has been a holiday favorite for years. At its most basic level, green bean casserole is a combination of green beans, mushroom soup, and French fried onions. For many families, green bean casserole is traditionally part of a certain holiday?s menu. It was first invented in 1955. Campbell’s soup company employees led by Dorcas Reilly, wanted to create a recipe to better promote their company?s product. Most homes at that time had both green beans and mushroom soup on hand, so creating a recipe that combined to the two was a simple way to promote Campbell’s soup. In 2002, the card with the original green bean casserole recipe was donated by Mrs. Reilly to the National Inventor?s Hall of Fame to be placed in their museum.
